Removing Pine Sap.... From Hair!

How can I remove pine sap from hair?

We have had to figure that out.... we have 2 beautiful pine trees... and we really like them.... but where we have trimmed them, they can leak sap and when that sap gets on something, it wants to stay and it is really sticky!

It can ooze from the cut......
The drops can hang.... and look beautiful....
but, you do NOT want to touch it.  (Although, I am sure I can find some use for the pine sap... I have considered making a pine sap salve which should be very good.... but haven't tried it yet!! :) Another idea for another time. :)

Recently my youngest daughter accidentally got too close to the pine sap.... and it stuck in her beautiful thick long hair.... yuck.

It isn't possible to just wash it out of the hair with shampoo.... it won't come out that way.

The sap can look pretty, but it can sure make a mess.  We are around those trees every day and usually don't have a problem... we stay away from the parts that are dripping and we don't let the kids climb those trees... I do NOT like to clean pine sap out of clothes OR hair!
Even pine cones and needles can have some sap on them.

Well, like I said, she got too close and had sap in her hair.  We sure didn't want to cut it out, so we tried something I had heard or read  .....   sometime. :)

Peanut Butter!  My daughter was horrified... so the only other thing I remembered hearing could work was mayonnaise - she agreed to the peanut butter but asked us to hurry before her brothers could see and make fun of her.

My oldest daughter (Wholesome Joy Photography :) applied the peanut butter while I took the picture. :)  It worked well.... you have to work it in and not just apply it.  By the way, I had them use creamy peanut butter.... imagine trying to wash the chopped nuts out of the hair.... better to use creamy peanut butter. :)

Here is the nice clean hair a couple of hours later.... it was soft and not sticky or greasy.  Just wash it out good with shampoo.... she fixed her own hair here... and did a pretty good job.

I read a lot.... and I remember tidbits of information that I have learned... this time it proved useful.

We still love our pine trees.... and enjoy them.... just need to stay away from that sap!

Thank you for visiting today... I hope you have a wonderful day! :)

  1. when I read the title, I was about to say "peanut butter or toothpaste!" haha, I'm sure peanut butter is probably better for her hair though :) You could use that resin to make incense if you wanted to. Here's a reference that can help you get started if that sounds like fun http://bearmedicineherbals.com/incense.html

  3. i think the peanut butter worked because it is oil based (peanut oil), however i think any oil would work. Try olive oil or coconut oil .. and you could even cut the oil with honey as those things are great for the hair. (do an oil pack on the hair and when you shampoo will need to do it twice 1-3 times). should make the hair lustrous. ...

    1. I agree that those should also work... at the time peanut butter was the handiest for our little "emergency". :) Thank you for visiting.
