Cabinet Makeover.......

I do a lot of work with essential oils, herbal tinctures, herbal teas and so on... and I need cabinet space for them. I like a cabinet that isn't very deep for this and have been watching Craigslist for the last year and not finding what I wanted.

Finally, last year, I found a cabinet that would work, but it needed to be set on something. The only thing I had was an old vanity table, so we attached the two together and I have used it ever since. It has been helpful, but I really wanted to have a base cabinet that would give storage also. The vanity table worked, but not the way I wanted it to and the underside of it just seemed to collect... stuff.  :(

I began praying for a different base cabinet and searching Craigslist, thrift stores, garage sales and so on.  I looked for many months, but the only possibilities I found were gone too fast and so they obviously weren't for me..... and there were only a couple of those. For the most part, I didn't find anything that would even work for what I wanted..

Finally, I came across this cabinet.... I like this style of cabinet and though not exactly what I wanted, it seemed that it would work.
My husband and son went to buy it for $25.00.

My husband called me to tell me the doors were warped... that wasn't stated in the ad and it wasn't obvious from the pictures. He did go ahead and buy it anyway for $20.00. I figured it would work ....  When he got home, I saw that the doors really are warped, but it will work until I find something better.

This is the idea.... to put it under this top cabinet. I had found the top cabinet over a year ago... I had looked so diligently to find it... these types of cabinets are very difficult to find in my area... I know that for sure as I have watched carefully for them.

Anyway, the top cabinet will fit on the bottom one...

As you can see in the top cabinet, I have a lot of jars and bottles in there....

The new cabinet is just a bit deeper than the top cabinet, which I like since that will help it to be stable.  This is really important to me... my collection of essential oils, tinctures and more.. represent quite a bit of money and I do not want to lose any of them... or injure anyone either, by a cabinet falling over.  :)

I decided to try to stain the cabinet to make it closer in color, to the top cabinet. After looking, I realized that I only had less than half of a can of stain... a little tiny can.   It was a color that would work, though, so I started on it.

Since the cabinet was unfinished, the stain just soaked in so fast... and the color seemed to be okay for what I needed.  This was a minwax stain so it left a bit of a sheen on the cabinet also, which I liked.

It was quite a difference....

Again, you can see the difference... stained and unstained.... I really like the stained side much better than the unstained one.

Seeing this picture made me realize that I will also need to stain the inside of the cabinet.

The backing of the cabinet inside has a lot of red in it, which really showed up after staining.

I DO like this little cabinet... I can picture old linens or lace draped over the doors while other linens are stored on the shelves.

Hmmmmm... but that will have to wait. For now this will be for herbs and tinctures. :)

I took a shelf from the cabinet I already had and brought it down to the garage where I was staining... I was hoping they would match a bit.

It's not perfect, but it sure isn't bad either.  It will definitely work!  :)

We have small L-brackets holding the upper and lower cabinets together, just as we did when it was on the vanity table. The top fits perfectly on the bottom... exactly.  I was disappointed as it looks top-heavy now and the bottom cabinet really needs to be at least a couple of inches wider, but it is MUCH better than the vanity table, so we are using it this way for now... until I find a cabinet that will work even better.

I DO like the lower cabinet, though, and look forward to using it in other ways in the house, once it is no longer needed here. So, I will keep looking for these types of cabinets.  :)  They really are hard to find... it is easier to find the big deep armoire-type cabinets, but that isn't what I need.... so, I have decided to buy every shallow cabinet I find that is a good price, if I have the money on hand... if it ends up not to be what I can use, I can always sell it.  I decided this a year ago, and these two are the ONLY ones I have found with intense searching.... of course, I am looking only at the cheaper ones... I am not willing to pay hundreds of dollars. :)

The top cabinet works well, but I had to pay quite a bit for it... much more than I wanted to pay, but I was getting desperate to have my essential oils and tinctures in a cabinet where they were visible and usable. I think I paid $45 or so for it, but it was the ONLY thing I could find.  After it was home, we realized it was an IKEA cabinet.

I hope to put fabric or lace behind the glass in the doors, but haven't done that yet. I will be doing future posts on organizing my essential oils and so on. I hope you will keep visiting my blog.... and I love hearing from you in the comments.

8 Things To Do When Sickness Strikes

We were supposed to go on a family daytrip... plans were made... destination was set.... bread was made, ready to be sliced for sandwiches....cans of tuna were on the table waiting to be made into tuna salad sandwiches just before we left.... first aid kit was all packed... bottles of water were ready.... snacks were ready and in the cooler.... cookies were made.... cameras had charged up batteries.... we were all ready to go. It was going to be a great trip. Then, at bedtime, I heard those dreaded words, "Mom, I don't feel well."

We hoped it would be gone by morning... it wasn't and instead of a special day trip of hiking and touring this old mansion, a few of us were sick and only able to shuffle from bed to sofa to chair and back. A couple of us spent almost the whole day lying around and sleeping. There was no energy at all... no appetite... no interest in reading or anything....  we were sick.  There has been sickness going around and we have done well and haven't gotten it... but now we have.

What is a mom to do when someone is sick? Especially when Mom is also one of the sick ones? Hmmm.

Well, here are some of the things that this mom does:

We try to eat healthy most of the time and are in quite good health, for the most part. The week prior to this, though, had been rushed, hectic and our meals hadn't been as healthy. Also we had a birthday to celebrate... and company several of the nights... and very late bedtimes... and stress.

1. Evaluate
Normally, when someone is sick, I immediately activate and try to pinpoint the possible cause...and treatment. Evaluating the days before the sickness is one of those steps, since that helped me see very quickly WHY we were sick... too little sleep, not good nutrition, too much stress, etc and our bodies were unable to fight off what was "going around".

Another thing I usually do is to evaluate symptoms. In this case, the biggest symptom was extreme fatigue, weakness and lethargy, along with headaches, nausea and more. No fevers. Not every person had the exact same symptoms, but there were some symptoms that hit all who were sick... mainly the fatigue, weakness, headache and nausea.

 2. Research

Research can happen in trusted books.... this is one I really like...and I also have many others. Research can also be done online(but be VERY careful of advice given there... I like to have 2 sources or more giving the advice.)  It is good to keep notes of information found so that it is available when needed. Research can also be done by talking with someone you trust... a friend or parent or other person who it knowledgeable on the subject.

3. Get a lot of rest and drink lots of fluids
Anyway, this time I was also sick.... and I knew my problem was stress, exhaustion, adrenal, etc. with the most urgent need being sleep, so I slept all I could for two days. All of us needed rest and sleep.

Sleep was good and needed... and lying around was fine. Lots of water was needed to flush toxins from the body, but who wants to drink a lot of water when not feeling well? Still, it has to be done.

Many times, over the years, I have noticed that different family members will respond differently to the same treatment when they have the exact same symptoms. Puzzling, but as I have analyzed that, I have found success when I treat each similarly, but tailored to each person. For example, I have noticed that one person may seem to do well when I try to treat their liver, another the pancreas, or lungs or digestion. It's not an exact thing, but it has sure helped. So, when one child has an upset stomach, I immediately suspect some constipation... and deal with it through essenial oils, pressure points, vitamins, etc. The same is true for other issues. It just shortens the process of dealing with issues, since some of them appear more often with sickness.

4.Use Herbal Teas Herbal teas are wonderful... they can be used to address specific symptoms... or just for general health.

 5. Take Probiotics

The probiotics in this picture are in the form of a Kefir smoothie. It could also be in the form of kombucha, yogurt, tablets, etc.

We also did  detox baths, probiotics, vitamins, lots of fluids, oils on the feet and ears, and herb tea and other things.

6.Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are helpful ....  in so many ways... we use them on the bottom of the feet and on ears, in bath water, diffused in some way, as a cleaner for germs...and more.

7. Take Herbal Tinctures and Vitamins
Herbal tinctures can be very helpful... I make my own... it is a way to preserve and condense the nutrients of the herbs.  There can be a lot of nutrient value to tintures.... Also vitamins can help, depending on what the sickness is.  The point is to help support the body while it is sick so that it can recover.

8. Take a Detox Bath There are different kinds of detox baths.... we use epsom salts and essential oils... or ginger, red pepper and baking soda... or I experimented today and came up with a really good one, but I need to work on the ingredients and amounts. I will probably share more on that another time. Even just an epsom salts bath can be so relaxing and helpful.

These are not "magic"... and maybe you would do only a couple or a few of these things... or maybe all of them... or maybe more. I am not a doctor or a health professional, just a mom with a lot of children... who studies and experiments and I have found some great things that help us, so I am sharing those.

A few other things are reflexology points... massaging them on the feet or hands... or back, etc., can help relax and allow the body to work better.  Sometimes a coffee enema can be helpful... I have seen it do wonders with a high fever since it can remove the source of the fever if the infection is in the intestines.

Today, we are improving, but not over it all yet. However, since I am able to write this, it is obvious that I have improved much since yesterday, I couldn't do anything but the bare minimum. We will need to be careful this week to allow our bodies to heal all the way... to rebuild our strength and immune systems. After the way I felt yesterday, I would have expected to be wiped out and incapacitated for days... what a relief to have a little energy again, even if it isn't the full amount I should have.

One tidbit I learned from a nutrition doctor years ago was:  You can eat everything healthy, you can drink enough water, you can take vitamins and nutrition, you can do everything "right", but stress can short-circuit everything.... and I have seen this to be true again and again. Too much stress is not a good thing, but we tend to live with too much stress...

Anyway, these 8 things can help to get over some sickness and get well. Maintainence is wonderful, but this article is about dealing with a bout of sickness and getting over it. I hope you and your family enjoy good health... and when you do face a problem with illness, maybe these things will be helpful to you. One thing we do each time is to pray also... to God who is the One who knows all things and is the Great Healer.  Thank you for visiting.  :)

Sleep Deprivation-When It Becomes Severe Part 5

In this sleep deprivation series, we have learned of the dangers of sleep deprivation to adults and children... the consequences of not getting the rest we need. We have talked about some ways to get more sleep.... but what about when sleep deprivation becomes severe? Is there any more we can do to help it?

We know we need sleep... we know it is a daily need, yet sometimes we have to go without sleep. Is it always severe? No... many times we can just get extra rest for a time and our bodies recover.  Other times, we need to really focus on the need for more sleep and be careful for a longer time. Sometimes, though, it goes beyond that... and becomes severe. Those who haven't suffered from insomnia may easily say to just go to sleep - it's not that hard. Oh, but it can be. It can start so simply....

One summer during my college years, I worked 2 jobs-back to back....16 hours in a row. Both jobs were in one building, so I just had to walk from the 3rd floor down to the 1st floor to start my day job. I was glad to make a little extra money to pay on my college tuition...it was only student wage, so it still wasn't a lot, but it sure helped. That summer was excessively hot... and there was no air conditioning in the dorms, but we could rent a room air conditioner. Since I was trying so hard to pay on my bill, I didn't want to spend the large monthly cost for the AC.  I was working from midnight until about 5 pm each day... so my only chance to sleep was after work and before I had to be back on the job at midnight, 5 days a week. Those were the hottest hours of the day and without AC, I couldn't sleep very well at all. Eventually, I had to get AC, but by then I still couldn't sleep. Once school started, my hours were greatly reduced, but I continued to work some and go to school full time... and my health couldn't take it. By mid semester, I was taken to the ER and it took a long time to recover...  but I did and I was more careful.

A few years later, after Son #2 was born with severe medical problems-there were so many emergencies... so many doctor appointments.... so many times of rushing to the ER...  Son #2 was on several medical machines when he finally came home from the hospital and the alarms would go off often... many times it was a false alarm, but every alarm had to be treated as serious because many times it was a real emergency and I would wake up, rush to my son's crib to suction his trach or do an emergency trach change or some other help for him. My husband was on nights at the time, so the nights were all my duty.... and then he needed to sleep in the daytime, so I needed to do much of the day duty also. Plus, Son #1 was 2 years old...and very very very active and I had to keep him quiet. I was exhausted and yet I couldn't ever let myself fall into a deep sleep.  I was on what I call "high alert status"... needing to always be ready to jump up and be completely awake to deal with an emergency.  When my husband went to days, he had to be to work at 5 am, but since we only had 1 vehicle and Son #2 had lots of doctor appointments... sometimes 4-7 a week, I needed to get the boys up early and take my husband to work many days. Anyway, there was much more... but suffice it to say that this drain on my sleep... this excessive stress... went on for many years....  My body became accustomed to sleeping lightly... always being "ready" to act quickly... and I wasn't really resting.... I was surviving.

When things finally settled down some with Son #2, we had a total of 6 kids, which is a big job by itself. (By the way, I am not at all complaining about my large family... I feel utterly blessed with each member of the family... I am just stating the facts.)The medical issues were still there, but less often, thankfully... but I still had to sleep lightly. When I was finally able to be "off duty" in the sense of my husband taking over for a bit... my body wouldn't give in to sleep. It was frustrating... When things get this far, it can turn to adrenal issues, thyroid issues and more.  The body needs sleep, yet the "high alert status" stays active... the body can't really relax.

I learned to never take caffeine after 3 pm.... and I didn't use much caffeine anyway... just some black tea, for the most part. I learned to do the things I shared in part 4 of this series...  and they did help. One problem with adrenal fatigue/exhaustion; however, is that as you desperately NEED sleep, the body become unable to sleep... it is one of the symptoms of the problem. So, the search for sleep had to intensify....
Again, I want to state that I am not a doctor or a health professional... I am just a woman who has studied much on the subject and also learned through trial and error. I am sharing things that have worked for me, but am not recommending these things as a cure for you. Each person is different and bodies can respond differently. Do your own research... be sure what you try is safe for you... some of the following things may be a problem for childen.. or if you are pregnant... or for other reasons. Be aware of the needs of your body and be wise in the things you try.

Some things I have learned:

-at times ear plugs are a big help.... or even just a bit of cotton in the ear to muffle noises
-the room needs to be dark for good sleep and the body's melatonin production.
-exercise is a good thing... earlier in the day, NOT before bed....with adrenal problems, though, excessive exercise is counterproductive, so I have to limit it
-my sleep is much more important than getting more things done, if they are not urgent.
-we don't talk about hard or involved issues in the evening... they interfere with my sleep
-I have to be careful to give myself time to "wind down" before sleep... reading or something quiet
-When I wake really early, I try to stay in bed and go back to sleep if possible... I used to just get up and get busy; however if it goes on too long, I get up anyway.
-I have limited caffeine even more... and I rarely have it at all... except some chocolate. :)
-I don't do too many activities outside the home in the evening... ever... since it interferes with my sleep and I feel too wound up to sleep for a long time afterwards.
-My husband institued a Quiet After 8:30pm Rule... quieter games and talking(we have found this helps everyone... not just me. :)
-There are herbs like wild lettuce, hops, licorice, peppermint, and others that can be helpful as tea or capsules.
-A magnesium deficiency-even slight- can interfere with sleep... I especially like using magnesium oil on my feet, before bed- this can be good for the whole family also. A calcium deficiency can also be a problem for sleeping.
-I need to take my B vitamins daily... B complex, pantothenic acid, and more.
-It is important to keep the digestion working well... constipation can interfere with sleep.
-I need to drink plenty of water during the day...
-In the winter months of dry inside air, a damp towel hanging over the heat vent can put moisture into the air to help with sleep.
-It is important to deal with issues... forgiveness, bitterness, worry and more as these things can interfere with sleep
-Singing and being joyful is a good thing for sleep... isn't funny how doing what God says to do anyway, can also help sleep? :)
-A warm bath with epsom salt and essential oils can be very relaxing. I know I already said that before, but relaxing is really important for good sleep... and when sleep deprivation becomes severe, it can be important to learn how to relax.
-As the body gets more and more tired, inflammation can result, which interferes with the sleep, especially if pain is present... I take tumeric/curcumin to help with inflammation.
-I have recently started making a passionflower/peppermint/red clover tea that is relaxing and soothing before bed.
-Get enough protein during the day..... My Energy Has Increased Because of Doing This...
-Breathing deeply can help cleanse the body and can help sleep.
-Melatonin can be helpful to use occasionally, but children should not take it.
-5-HTP can be helpful
-I love it when my husband or kids rub my shoulders/back... it is relaxing and can aid in sleeping.
-When the sleep deprivation was really bad, I started lying down for a nap every day... even if I couldn't sleep, I found that being horizontal during the day was helpful for adrenal fatigue/exhaustion...and it also helped the sleep deprivation.
-I try to be off of the computer by 8 pm..... My daughter reminded me of this fact when I was working on Part 4 of this series... I was working on it later than usual because my husband was in the bath and I could just keep on working until 10 pm... I got it all done, BUT my daughter and I laughed over the fact that one of the things I said in the post I was writing was how important it was to get to bed earlier and to be off of the electronic devices earlier. sigh- I have to keep learning. :)
-I do not use an alarm clock, if I can help it... I tend to wake up early anyway. When I do need one, I use a sun clock that just lightens the room... it is a gentler way to wake up and it has really helped me... I have been startled awake for too many years and I am needing to try to avoid that. :)
-Reduce stress as much as possible.
-I thank God for the sleep I get... even when it isn't nearly enough.... I will just try harder the next night to get more sleep.
-I have found that working consistently on this problem is better than getting a lot of sleep one night and little the next.
- I have had to learn that it is okay to focus on what my body needs.... I have spent years focusing almost entirely on my family and their needs... and it isn't selfish to do what needs to be done to help me sleep well... although it can feel like it. We do need to be careful not to carry this too far and expect to become a pampered princess. :)

I assume that I will not be able to let my guard down in the this area... maybe ever.... and that is okay. The wonderful thing is that God has allowed this to improve so much for me... what a blessing. When my dad had his heart surgery and he and Mom were in the city under our care for 6 weeks, I found that my body slipped back into that "high alert status"... and I have been working  since then to calm it down again. It is working, but slowly...  I have had to make sleep a bigger priority again... and that is okay.

Yes, I'm Sleep-Deprived... Now What? Part 4

This is part 4 in The Sleep Deprivation Series.

Sleep Deprivation.... a serious subject.... and lots of people suffer from it. Sometimes it is mild and sometimes it is severe, sometimes it is temporary and sometimes it is long-term. If we know we are sleep-deprived, WHAT can we do about it???

If you haven't yet read the first 3 parts of the series and would like to, you can find them here:

Are You Sleep Deprived? Part 1

Yes, I'm Sleep Deprived - So What? Part 2

Sleep Deprivation Affects Children Also-Part 3

We have learned that sleep deprivation can become quite serious as the sleep debt grows and recovering from sleep deprivation is not as easy as just taking a nap unless only a very little sleep has been lost.

For more severe sleep deprivation- that is more than missing just a few hours of sleep once in a while... it can take days, weeks, months.. or even years to stabilize the body and repair the damage.

We have reviewed some of the dangers of losing sleep... of a building sleep-debt. Some of those are health problems, accidents, clumsiness, irritabilitiy, depression, weight gain, fatigue, memory problems.... and more. So maybe you have concluded that you DO have at least some sleep deprivation.... maybe a little or maybe a lot. What can you do about it? Is there hope? What if you try... and still can't sleep?  So many issues....

There is no magic cure... no pill to make it all "better"... and no shortcuts for making up the sleep.... but there are some things that can help. I do want to state that I am not a doctor... nor am I a health professional of any kind.... I am just a woman who has suffered from sleep deprivation and I have studied and experimented and I am sharing some those things. You will have to decide if you will do anything about this... and what it will be.

Here are some things that may possibly help:

~ limit caffeine and don't take any caffeine after 3pm or even 2 pm

~use only lower lights for 1-2 hours before bed.... not the overheads, if possible

~stop using the computer, cell phone, and other electronics devices 1-2 hours before bed

~keep the room you sleep in... a bit cool

~establish a bed time and try to keep to it as much as possible

~develop a routine for before bed and try to stick with it

~do lighter reading before bed and not high exciting adventure

~exercise, but earlier in the day-not right before bed

~make it a practice to breathe deeply several times a day

~a warm bath with epsom salts and/or a few drops of essential oils can be soothing

~don't watch TV in bed... or in the bedroom at all, if possible

~a cup of tea may be calming... chamomile is good... or peppermint...licorice, hops, etc

~sleep in a dark room, if possible
~wear ear plugs or a sleep mask, if necessary

~melatonin may help

~have a quiet spirit before bed... this isn't the time to "brain storm" or debate a subject

~be thankful, recite scripture, pray

~ a snack of bananas, turkey, yogurt or milk

There are also many sleep aid medicines on the market, but some of them can be dangerous, have unpleasant side effects or quit working after a while and I don't choose to use the mainstream remedies, although you are free to do so, if you choose. It is a good idea to do your research on them first.

There are natural ways to investigate for dealing with the problem also...   Good nutrition is important for a healthy body, so eating a healthy diet is helpful. As was already stated, exercise is important... and working hard can lead to better sleep as the body, including the muscles, gets tired and relaxes.  Also, sometimes certain vitamins or minerals could help.... like magnesium, calcium, brewer's yeast, and more.

Some possible nutritional helps include: hops, valerian, melatonin, lemon balm, passionflower, skullcap, california poppy.

Essential oils can be helpful and used as a bath additive or topically.... some good ones are: lavender, chamomile and marjoram.  I suffer from allergies and feeling "stuffed up", so I LOVE using eucalyptus and peppermint in my bathwater. I put a few drops on the top of the water, then sprinkle epsom salts over the drops to absorb them... they stay fragrant, but they don't burn my skin when I get in.

Hormonal changes can lead to insomnia, so if you are at an age where this can be an issue, it might help to address that.

Obviously, this isn't a comprehensive article... much more could be said. You wouldn't want to do all of the things listed here... some of them I have never done, but I might someday... others I do every day and they help. It is important to do your own research before you use herbs, essential oils and more. They are VERY helpful... but be wise in using them. For example, some things are safe in pregnancy and others aren't, some are safe for children and some aren't and some may not mix well with medicines you are taking, etc.  If you choose to try something, choose one item and research it and add it to what you do... if it helps keep it... if not, discard it.

There is hope... and it is possible to recover from sleep deprivation. Thank you for joining me for this series..... I am planning a summary article to the series, so I hope you will return for that if this is a subject which interests you.  I hope you are able to sleep well and wake refreshed.
