Seed Cereal Breakfast

Once in a while, we have a seed cereal breakfast. It is quite nutritious... and surprisingly, most of my kids love it.

It is easy and fast.... various seeds can be used. I soak them overnight in water... then we have them for breakfast. It is an uncooked meal and the nutrients are preserved.

These are the seeds I used this time:

Pearled Barley
Organic Raw Pumpkin Seeds
Roasted and Salted Sunflower Seeds
Wheat berries

Usually, I don't use the roasted and salted seeds, but sometimes I do. I always use RAW pumpkin seeds as they are so nutritious. Many other seeds, nuts and fruit can be used... I like using flax seeds, sometimes I put almonds in... or raisins.. there are many possibilites. We don't have this very often, but we plan to have it more often... I just need to remember to prepare it in the evening.

In the picture above, you can see the various seeds which I put into a bowl (smaller mixing bowl size).

Here, the water has been poured over the seeds. You want enough water to more than cover the seeds, but not a lot more.

Here are the soaked seeds... I had to pour a little of the water off and this could be used in soup, bread or in some other way.

Next, I just put some into each bowl - I use small dessert bowls. This is a filling cereal, so no one will want to eat very much.... maybe 1/4-1/2 cup or so. This is a chewy cereal... and I encourage the family to chew it well and not eat too fast.

Next a large dollop of yogurt goes on top.

We had our seed cereal with tea and toast.... it was quite satisfying. The other nice thing we find about this meal, is that we don't get hungry as fast as with some other meals... it seems to stick with us and is very healthy.

Just stir it up ....  and eat.

One thing I plan to try next time, is to put some Celtic salt into the soaking water... not a lot, but some. I think it will improve the flavor a bit... AND add some great minerals to our breakfast.

I do not like to use regular breakfast cereals, although we do have them sometimes. I think we would tire of this if we had it too often, but for once in a while, it is great.

By the way, the packages I showed in a picture earlier in the post.... have already been used 2 or 3 times for seed cereal. As you can see, it doesn't take a lot of it at a time and those packages will last for many meals. Thank you for visiting.

    1. Good... I hope you enjoy it... it sure feels like a very healthy dish to eat and I was surprised how much the kids liked it and ask for it... part of the reason is that it is filling and keeps them satisfied for quite a while. My husband likes the yogurt the best :) and tolerates the seeds. :) Thank you for visiting.

  2. Very interesting...I'd have to have it without the yogurt as I'm allergic to it, but it looks very satisfying! Love your teacup. Thanks for linking to Tuesday Cuppa Tea.

    1. That's a shame to be allergic to yogurt, but you may enjoy it another way. :) I liked this "new" teacup also... found it at a thrift store and I am really enjoying it. :)

    1. That's a good point, although I don't think we will do without homemade bread around here... it is just too tasty. We do eat less of it than we used to though. :)

    1. Mine do too.... I hope you are able to try it... it is certainly different than boxed cereal (which I rarely buy), but it is good once in a while. :)

  9. That does look good especially soaking the seeds first would make them easy to chew. Of course I love the yogurt,

    1. I like seeds also and soaking them is great... I also have figured I would try some experiments of soaking them in other liquids besides water... not sure what I would use... hmmm... maybe kombucha? I don't know if that would be good or not... more experimenting will probably happen around here. :)
